The CHC43115 -Certificate IV in Disability is a nationally recognised course to become an effective disability support worker. This course provides you with the knowledge and skills required to provide quality services to people with disability.

Certificate IV in Disability reflects the role of workers in a range of community settings and clients’ homes, who provide training and support in a manner that empowers people with disabilities to achieve greater levels of independence, self-reliance, community participation and wellbeing. Workers promote a person-centred approach, work without direct supervision and may be required to supervise and/or coordinate a small team.

The Certificate IV in Disability prepares you for employment opportunities as a disability support worker. You will develop your understanding of disability issues and learn how to apply this knowledge to meet the needs of individuals with disability. You will also gain practical experience through placement at a local service provider or organisation.

Course Duration:

This qualification will be delivered over 52 weeks, including 40 weeks of training and assessment spread over 4 terms of 10 weeks each and 12 weeks of holidays.

The qualification requires that a work placement of 120 hours is completed.

Pre-requisites:There are no pre-requisites for Certificate IV in Disability or any of the units of competency contained within it.
Admission Requirements:

Ridge International College has the following entry requirements for eligible students:
For enrolment into the course International students must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age and have completed the equivalent of Year 12.
  • Participate in a course entry interview to determine suitability for the course and student needs.
  • Have an IELTS* score of 5.5 (test results must be no more than 2 years old). English language competence can also be demonstrated through documented evidence of any of the following:
    • Educated for 5 years in an English-speaking country; or
    • Successful completion of an English Placement Test

*Note that other English language tests such as PTE and TOEFL can be accepted. Students are required to provide their results so that it can be confirmed they are equivalent to IELTS 5.5.

Delivery and Assessment

Delivery of the course:

The qualification is delivered over 52 weeks comprising of:

  • Four (4) terms of 10 weeks each (40 weeks total).
  • Holiday breaks amounting to 12 weeks (as specified in the timetable)

Students are required to attend 20 hours of classroom training per week.

Homework is expected to be approximately 5 hours a week.

The training and assessment schedule shows the weeks during which training is delivered and assessment conducted for each unit.

The total amount of training provided being structured classroom sessions is 492 hours. Time scheduled for assessment in class is 228 hours. Homework which is unsupervised and may include research for assessments and general reading is expected to be on average 5 hours a week.

A work placement of 120 hours is required as per Training Package requirements.

Total delivery and assessment hours therefore amount to 840 hours and the volume of learning (i.e., including unsupervised learning of homework) is 1,040 hours. A detailed breakdown of hours is provided in the Training and Assessment Schedule.

Ridge International College has decided on the course duration and amount of training taking into account the AQF Volume of Learning, which is typically 0.5 – 2 years and 600 – 2,400 hours. It is considered that the duration and amount of training provided will allow students the opportunity to fully absorb the required knowledge, as well as develop skills over time.

Assessment

Assessment will occur through a variety of methods, including projects incorporating role- plays, case studies, observations, and short answer questions.

Assessment conditions will ensure a simulated workplace environment for classroom- based assessment.

Assessment tasks:

  • Reflect real life work tasks.
  • Are required to be performed within industry standard timeframes as specified by assessors in relation to each task.
  • Are assessed using assessment criteria that relate to the quality of work expected by the industry.
  • Are performed to industry safety requirements as relevant.

Training and Assessment Strategy:

  • Utilise authentic workplace documentation.
  • Require students to work with others as part of a team.
  • Require students to plan and prioritise competing work tasks.
  • Involve the use of standard, workplace equipment such as computers and software.
  • Ensure that students are required to consider workplace constraints such as time and budgets.

Work Placement

Students will be required to complete 120 hours of work placement.  The work placement is to be completed as shown in the Training and Assessment Schedule.

Because students learn best while applying their new skills in the work place the work placement hours provides students with the opportunity to further develop their skills. Time in class is provided following the work placement to allow students to work on their portfolios after gaining practical experience and while the experiences are fresh in their minds.

Work placement providers will be provided with a list of activities that students are to complete in the workplace to develop their skills. Assessment will also be conducted in the workplace by Ridge International College trainer and assessor.
Students must undergo a police check prior to placement which will be at the student’s own cost. Immunisations may also be required – this will be advised by the student’s workplace.

Ridge International College will assist all students to obtain work placements. However, students may also find their own work placement. Work placement agreements will be signed with participating organisations and a facilities check will take place prior to the agreement being signed.

Trainers/assessor will visit students on their work placement at least 4 times. The purpose of these visits will be to meet with students to discuss any issues concerning the placement or questions the student has, as well as to conduct observations for assessment purposes.

RPL/Credit Transfer

Students can apply for recognition of prior learning, and work experience towards this qualification. During the course of your life, you will develop a wide range of skills and knowledge. Through work, volunteer roles, family commitments, and various tasks undertaken in everyday life, you are building up a bank of knowledge. The evidence of these skills and knowledge accumulated can be used to help you gain a qualification.
